The sinking economy has taken a heavy toll on senior citizens in our community. Fixed incomes are stretched thin, and many older people have lost much of the savings they depend on for living expenses. For some older people, this leads to heart-wrenching decisions between buying food and medicine, or paying for important maintenance and repairs on their homes.
The Universal Lending Foundation's mission is to help low-income seniors take care of their houses, allowing them to continue living in their houses safely and enjoying the pride of ownership.
Adopt-A-Home
A leaky roof could cause someone to slip on a wet floor, and a broken window can bring on a terrible chill. Putting off maintenance and repairs on a house can very quickly lead to a bad situation where both the house and its older owners fall into neglect.
The Adopt-A-Home initiative provides opportunities for individuals, businesses and community organizations to help struggling older adults take care of their houses.
Our oldest community members have worked hard their whole lives to pay off their houses. Now they just need us to lend them a hand so they can continue to live safely and comfortably in their home.

How it works:
The Universal Lending Foundation will identify low-income, older adults who are struggling to afford the costs of maintenance and repairs on their houses. The Foundation will recruit and organize volunteers from businesses, churches, clubs and any other group that would like to lend a hand. Volunteers will be asked to make a one-year commitment to the house they adopt, helping out once a month with projects that will help seniors live comfortably and safely in their homes. Projects may include:
- Painting and caulking
- Gutter repair
- Yard maintenance, landscaping and even planting flowers
- Deck and porch repair
- Fence installation and repair
- Minor safety and mobility improvements
- Minor roof and window repair
Special skills in construction or maintenance are welcomed, but not at all required. Just your commitment to make a difference in the life of an older person in our community. Volunteer today. Donate today.
